Obituary

Robert "Bob" L. Gravely Jr. of Oak Hill, WV was 87 years old when he left this world on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at home, with his loving wife, Dale Evelyn Robbins Gravely, and family surrounding him.

Bob had been suffering for many years from Alzheimer’s disease. His pain is gone, he is with his family and friends who had gone on before him.

Robert was born on March 6, 1932, in Carlisle, WV to Robert L. Gravely, Sr., and Anna Pearl Renick Gravely.

Robert was the second to the youngest of four children. His sister, Allie Johnson (Harold), of San Diego, CA, Ray Gravely (Jane), of Oak Hill, WV, both preceding Robert in death, and the youngest sister, Alice Gravely Wendell (Grey), of Columbus, Ohio.

Robert grew up in the coal camps of Minden, WV where his father worked in the mines. He had many great memories and stories about his childhood which he loved to share. In 1950, Robert graduated from Oak Hill High School, where he was a member of the track team, and immediately joined the Air Force, and was sent to California to be stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield. Robert was sent to Korea, and for a little while was in Hawaii during the Korean War, he was given an Honorable discharge after his service in this war in 1953.

While stationed at Travis Air Force Base, a friend of his had a girlfriend who wanted to introduce him to one of her friends. In 1953, he was introduced to Dale Evelyn Robbins who was living in South San Francisco, Ca, approximately nine months after this introduction, Robert and Dale headed to Reno, NV on April 16, 1953 to get married. On April 16, 2019, they will have been married for 66 years.

After getting married in 1953, Robert worked for Swift Company, a local shipping company near their apartment. A few years later he was transferred to Portsmouth, Ohio, to work for a finance company, where they lived for 2 years. Robert was then transferred back to California to work for Pacific Finance Company, in Irvington, CA. The family all moved to Newark, CA for several months, and then to Fremont, CA, where they lived nearer to family for almost 17 years. Robert enhanced his education as he worked by taking classes while working, to get an Associates degree in business.

In 1971, Robert moved his family back to his home in Oak Hill, WV, while working for People’s Life Insurance Company in Beckley, WV.

Soon after moving back to Oak Hill, Robert, his wife Dale, and their children joined the First Presbyterian Church of Oak Hill. Robert and Dale have been members of this church for 50 years. The family were very active members of the church, and they built many life long friendships while there. They were both acting session members of the church as elders. Robert and Dale also began along with another church member the local Food Pantry along with the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association which helps many people in the areas with nutrition needs each month, which has been helping many since 1985.

Robert also belonged to the Presbyterian Choir, played music for the church, wrote his own music which he shared with all the members. Robert’s daughter, Kristy, and himself sang several duets over the years while attending the First Presbyterian church.
