Obituary

Carl Robert Godby passed away on January 10 in Newark, Delaware, two days after his 90th birthday. He is preceded in death by his brothers Charles, Bill, and Lawrence. He is survived by his wife Barbara, of Newark, and their three children: Terry, of Arlington, Virginia; Jean, of Columbus, Ohio; and Jim, of Newark.

Carl was born in Sun, West Virginia on January 8, 1929. He was the son of a coal miner and the direct descendant of settlers from England who arrived in Jamestown, VA in 1620. Carl met Barbara in Oak Hill, WV, and they were married in 1950 in Mount Hope, WV. The same year, Carl joined the US Air Force, and he and Barbara moved away from West Virginia. During Carl's twenty-year career in the Air Force, his family lived in Virginia, Newfoundland, Texas, Germany, Illinois, and Delaware. Carl also spent a year in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive in 1968, working as an electrician on the Phu Cat Air Force Base near Qui Nhon. When he retired from Dover Air Force Base in 1970, a job at DuPont was waiting for him. He was always proud to tell people that he worked there. In his free time, Carl was a skilled aviator and owned a small airplane. He liked to play his guitar. He loved to travel with Barbara and their adult children. They drove to Florida nearly every year for about 30 years. And they often made multiple trips to West Virginia in the same year to attend family events. Carl's kindness, quiet competence, and wry sense of humor will be sorely missed.
A memorial service in Carl's honor will be held at High Lawn Funeral Home in Oak Hill, West Virginia, on Friday, March 22, 2019, at 11 am. Family and friends are encouraged to bring stories, memories, and photos to share. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
